Volleyball is a team sport in which players attempt to land the ball on the opponent's side of a net. The teams consist of six players in indoor volleyball and, usually, two players in the beach version of the sport. Volleyball is an official Olympic sport, both on the beach and indoors.
There are many rules which govern the play of volleyball. The basic premise is that a point is awarded when a team successfully lands the ball on the opponent's side of the court or when the opposing team commits a fault.
Because volleyball is different from most other sports a unique set of skills is required. These include setting, passing, serving, blocking, and hitting. Specialized positions have been developed that place an emphasis on one or two particular skills. This allows teams to hone players to specific skills and, as a team, to be a well-rounded unit. In part, it is this specialization and the reliance upon other players with specialized skills which makes volleyball a very team-oriented sport.
